Bowers & Wilkins HTM71 S3

The HTM71 S3 is the flagship centre channel loudspeaker in the 700 Series S3 range — a three-way design that brings the full complement of 700 Series S3 driver technology to the most demanding role in a home cinema system. Dialogue clarity, dynamic authority, and tonal consistency with the main left and right loudspeakers are the defining requirements of a centre channel, and the HTM71 S3 addresses all three with the same engineering rigour that characterises the 700 Series S3 floorstanders and stand-mounts. It is the natural partner for the 702 S3, 703 S3 and 705 S3 in a serious home cinema system, and it makes the case that centre channel performance need not be a weak link in an otherwise high-quality installation. Martins Hi-Fi is the second oldest Bowers & Wilkins dealer in the world, and the HTM71 S3 is a loudspeaker we recommend with complete confidence to those building a 700 Series S3 surround system.

Carbon Dome Tweeter and Tweeter-on-Top

The HTM71 S3 carries Bowers & Wilkins' carbon dome tweeter, mounted in the Tweeter-on-Top configuration above the main cabinet in its own Solid Body aluminium enclosure machined from a single billet of aluminium. The mechanical isolation this arrangement provides allows the carbon dome to resolve high-frequency detail entirely free from the vibrations generated by the midrange and bass drivers — delivering treble that is extended, composed, and tonally consistent with the carbon dome tweeters in the 702 S3, 703 S3 and 705 S3. In a centre channel application, this tonal consistency across the front soundstage is not a luxury — it is essential to the coherence of the entire system.

Continuum FST Midrange Driver

The HTM71 S3's midrange driver employs Bowers & Wilkins' Continuum cone in a Fixed Suspension Transducer mounting — eliminating the conventional foam surround and the resonance colouration it introduces across the critical midrange frequencies. The midrange unit is housed in its own dedicated enclosure within the main cabinet, mechanically isolated from the bass drivers — a structural arrangement that gives the HTM71 S3 the midrange transparency and dialogue clarity that its role demands. Vocals, speech, and the fine textural detail of a film soundtrack pass through the Continuum FST driver with a precision and naturalness that makes the HTM71 S3 immediately distinguishable from centre channel loudspeakers that do not share this architecture.

Aerofoil Bass Drivers

Twin Aerofoil profile bass drivers handle the HTM71 S3's low-frequency reproduction — the variable-thickness composite cone technology derived from aerospace engineering that provides stiffness and rigidity precisely where the cone geometry demands it, without the mass penalty of a conventionally stiffened driver. The twin-driver arrangement in the HTM71 S3's horizontal cabinet provides the bass authority and dynamic headroom that a flagship centre channel requires, ensuring that the HTM71 S3 can match the low-frequency output of the 702 S3 and 703 S3 at realistic home cinema listening levels.

Cabinet Construction

The HTM71 S3's cabinet is engineered for horizontal deployment as a centre channel — a format that demands careful attention to off-axis behaviour and driver symmetry to ensure consistent dialogue clarity across the full width of a listening room. The Tweeter-on-Top arrangement places the carbon dome above the midrange axis, providing the same mechanical isolation as in the 700 Series S3 floorstanders and ensuring that the HTM71 S3's high-frequency performance is as composed and refined as any loudspeaker in the range.

Who Is It For?

The HTM71 S3 is for those building a serious 700 Series S3 home cinema system around the 702 S3, 703 S3 or 705 S3 — and who understand that the centre channel carries the majority of a film's dialogue and deserves the same level of engineering as the main left and right loudspeakers. It pairs naturally with the Bowers & Wilkins DB2D or DB1D subwoofer for those seeking the full 700 Series S3 surround experience, and it is available to hear at our Norwich showroom in a full home cinema demonstration.
