Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 Signature

The 705 S3 Signature sits at the top of the 700 Series stand-mount range — a compact two-way loudspeaker that draws directly on the engineering developed for B&W's 800 Series Signature models. It is not simply the standard 705 S3 with a cosmetic upgrade. The Signature programme means revised components, refined engineering, and measurable improvements to the drive unit motor system and crossover — changes that exist because B&W's engineers found a way to make it better, not because the calendar demanded a new SKU.

Tweeter-on-Top

The 705 S3 Signature uses B&W's Tweeter-on-Top configuration, mounting the 25mm decoupled carbon dome high-frequency unit in a separate pod above the main cabinet. The logic is straightforward: a tweeter mounted on a separate structure cannot receive vibration from the cabinet or the bass/midrange driver. What that means in practice is that high-frequency detail is retrieved without colouration from cabinet resonance — the tweeter is doing its job in isolation, as intended. The carbon dome itself is chosen for its stiffness-to-mass ratio, which keeps the tweeter operating within its designed frequency range without the breakup distortion that affects softer dome materials.

Continuum Mid-Bass Driver

The 165mm bass/midrange driver uses B&W's proprietary Continuum cone material — a woven composite that B&W developed as the successor to Kevlar. Continuum is designed to suppress the cone resonances that create a characteristic colouration in the upper midrange, the frequency region where the human voice sits and where listeners are most sensitive to inaccuracy. This driver handles both the midrange and bass frequencies in the 705 S3 Signature's two-way configuration, loaded in a rear-ported vented-box enclosure.

Signature Upgrades

The distinction between the 705 S3 and the 705 S3 Signature lies in a series of targeted refinements applied during the Signature programme. The mid-bass motor system has been upgraded — a change that affects the precision of cone control across the driver's operating range. The crossover capacitors have been improved, which matters because capacitor quality directly influences timing and transient accuracy. The speaker terminals have been revised, and the tweeter grille mesh has been made more open, reducing diffraction in front of the tweeter. Each of these changes was developed as part of the 800 Series Signature project and has been applied here. The result is a stand-mount that reflects the most current thinking in B&W's engineering programme.

The 705 S3 Signature is available in Midnight Blue Metallic and Datuk Gloss — two finishes developed specifically for the Signature range that distinguish it visually from the standard 700 Series.

Who Is It For?

The 705 S3 Signature is for the listener who has decided on stand-mount geometry — whether through room constraints or a preference for the imaging characteristics of a compact two-way — and wants the best that B&W's 700 Series engineering can deliver. It pairs naturally with amplification in the £2,000–£5,000 range; driving it with something underqualified is a waste of what the Signature programme has achieved. If you are undecided between a stand-mount and a floorstander, the 702 S3 Signature is the natural comparison — we can demonstrate both at the showroom.

This is not the right speaker if you need significant bass extension below the port tuning frequency without a subwoofer. For those who do want to supplement the low end, the B&W DB1D or DB2D subwoofers integrate well within the B&W ecosystem.
