Bowers & Wilkins 703 S3

The Bowers & Wilkins 703 S3 is the three-way floorstander that brings the Tweeter-on-Top configuration to the 700 Series S3 range for the first time — a loudspeaker of extraordinary engineering ambition that draws directly on the technology of the 800 Series Diamond and delivers it in a cabinet of elegant, room-friendly proportions. The 703 S3 unites the Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top housing, carbon dome tweeter, Continuum FST midrange driver with Biomimetic Suspension, and twin Aerofoil Profile bass drivers in a three-way design of effortless authority — a loudspeaker that sets a new standard for what the 700 Series can achieve. Martins Hi-Fi is the second oldest Bowers & Wilkins dealer in the world, and the 703 S3 is one of the most significant loudspeakers we stock.

Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top

The 703 S3's Tweeter-on-Top housing is milled from a single solid block of aluminium — a process that eliminates the resonant behaviour of conventional assemblies and places the tweeter in conditions of near-perfect mechanical isolation from the main cabinet. The housing incorporates a longer tube-loading system than previous iterations, producing a high-frequency presentation that is more free, more open, and more extended than anything the 700 Series has previously offered. The result is a treble of exceptional precision and composure — one that resolves the finest spatial and micro-dynamic detail of every recording without strain or colouration.

Carbon Dome Tweeter

Purpose-built for the 700 Series, the carbon dome tweeter raises the breakup threshold to 47kHz — a figure that places it in an entirely different category from the aluminium double dome tweeter it replaces. This dramatic improvement ensures that the upper frequencies remain wholly free of colouration and resonance throughout the audible range and far beyond it, delivering pinpoint imaging accuracy and a level of micro-detail retrieval that reveals the full spatial and emotional depth of a recording. The carbon dome's stiffness-to-mass ratio is the foundation of the 703 S3's high-frequency authority.

Continuum FST Midrange with Biomimetic Suspension

The 703 S3's dedicated midrange driver unites four of Bowers & Wilkins' most advanced technologies: the Continuum cone, Fixed Suspension Transducer mounting, Biomimetic Suspension, and midrange decoupling. The Continuum cone's composite construction suppresses the break-up modes that impair conventional drive units across the critical midrange frequencies — delivering voices and instruments with a neutrality and transparency that communicates the full weight of a performance. Biomimetic Suspension, inspired by the structure of the human eardrum, further reduces unwanted mechanical noise and lowers the noise floor, revealing levels of low-level detail that conventional suspension systems cannot access. Midrange decoupling isolates the midrange unit entirely from bass driver operation, preserving purity of reproduction at every listening level.

Aerofoil Profile Bass

The 703 S3's twin Aerofoil Profile bass cones are the product of advanced computer modelling — each cone engineered with variable thickness to provide stiffness and rigidity precisely where the physics demand it, without the mass penalty of a conventionally stiffened driver. The result is bass that is both profoundly deep and endlessly articulate: rhythmically precise, tonally rich, and entirely free of the overhang and smearing that compromise lesser designs.

Who Is It For?

The 703 S3 is for the serious listener who demands the full engineering ambition of a three-way design in a cabinet that works in medium to large rooms without overwhelming the space. It scales generously with amplifier and source quality — the more resolving the system, the more the 703 S3 reveals. Those seeking greater low-frequency reach can complete the system with a Bowers & Wilkins DB2D or DB1D subwoofer, extending the foundation of the music to its absolute limits.

Buying from Martins Hi-Fi

Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
