Arcam Radia CD5 CD Player

Physical media is not going anywhere. For the listener who has spent decades building a CD collection, the CD5 is the Arcam answer: a purpose-built disc transport that plays CDs with a signal-to-noise ratio of 115dB in 24-bit mode, coaxial and optical digital outputs, and a USB port for high-resolution files alongside the discs. It is a clean, honest component built to the same physical standard as the rest of the Radia range, at £699.

Where the CD5 Sits in the Radia Range

The Radia range is built as a matched system. The CD5 is the physical source, designed to sit alongside the Radia ST5 streamer — both share the 431 × 344mm footprint and 83mm height of the Radia integrated amplifiers. Whether you connect via coaxial digital to an A5+, A15+, or A25+, or use the analogue output directly, the CD5 provides a source signal that matches the quality of the amplifier receiving it.

The CD5 plays standard CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs, and via its USB-A port it handles WAV and FLAC files at up to 96kHz/24-bit alongside MP3, AAC, and WMA. If streaming has not replaced your discs — and for many listeners it has not — the CD5 gives you a dedicated, properly engineered transport rather than a laptop or a compromise.

Sound and Performance

The 115dB signal-to-noise ratio in 24-bit operation is the headline figure, but what it reflects is a clean signal path and good power supply design. CDs are 16-bit recordings; the CD5’s 93dB SNR in 16-bit mode is the number that applies to disc playback directly. Both figures are well above what the format or the listening environment requires, which means the noise floor is never a limiting factor.

The frequency response of ±0.05dB from 20Hz to 20kHz is exceptionally flat — the kind of number that reflects careful analogue output stage design rather than marketing. The maximum analogue output of 2.1V RMS at 0dBFS is a standard line-level output that drives any amplifier input cleanly, with no need for level trimming or gain adjustments.

Arcam has been making CD players since the original CD player era of the 1980s. The CD5 carries nearly four decades of that experience in disc reading, error correction, and analogue output implementation. The result is a player that is noticeably more composed on worn or scratched discs than cheaper transports, and which presents a stable, well-organised soundstage from well-recorded material.

Build Quality and Design

The CD5 matches the Radia amplifiers exactly in width (431mm) and depth (344mm), and at 83mm it occupies the same rack height. The 6kg chassis is solid rather than heavy; it is a well-made component that does not flex or rattle. The front panel is clean: disc tray, transport controls, and a display that shows track information without clutter. Build quality is clearly better than similarly-priced CD players from manufacturers with less engineering history.

Power consumption of 12W at idle reflects the fact that this is a transport-focused design rather than a heavy amplification device. It runs cool and can be left on without concern about either energy use or component stress.

Connectivity and System Matching

One stereo RCA analogue output pair covers direct connection to an amplifier. One coaxial digital output (RCA) and one optical (Toslink) give two routes into the digital input of an amplifier with a built-in DAC — the coaxial is the preferred connection for signal integrity where both options are available. The USB-A port reads mass storage devices containing WAV, FLAC, MP3, AAC, and WMA files.

Who Is the CD5 For?

The CD5 suits the listener who has a CD collection they value and wants a dedicated, quality transport rather than a multi-purpose device that happens to play discs. It is the natural physical source for anyone building a Radia system, and it pairs equally well with any amplifier that has an analogue or digital input. If streaming is your primary source but you also have discs, the CD5 and ST5 together cover both without compromise.

Buying from Martin’s Hi-Fi

Martin’s Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Arcam range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Ted Martin’s daughter Elizabeth runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

The CD5 is available to hear in our Norwich showroom; call ahead and we will have it set up with a system that makes sense for your budget. When you get in touch, you will be speaking to Dave or Chris — both experienced hi-fi specialists who can talk you through whether the CD5 or the full Radia system is the right fit for your room and your system.

Reach them at dave@martinshifi.co.uk, chris@martinshifi.co.uk, info@martinshifi.co.uk, call on 01603 627010, or WhatsApp Dave or Chris directly on 07554 687137 for a quick answer after your purchase. You can read more about who we are and how we work on our Why Martin’s page. We are at 85–91 Ber Street, Norwich, NR1 3EY, open six days a week.
