The REL T/9x SE: When a Subwoofer Comes in Italian Racing Red
There's a particular kind of customer who walks into Martins Hi-Fi, points at a subwoofer, and says: "I want that one. The red one." They are not wrong to want it. But what makes the REL T/9x Special Edition genuinely interesting has less to do with the colour and more to do with what REL changed underneath the skin to justify a Special Edition badge.
The answer, it turns out, is the driver.
A Lighter Cone Does More Than You'd Think
The T/9x SE replaces the standard 10-inch driver with a new 250mm long-throw fibrecarbon cone — carbon fibre construction with an inverted carbon fibre centre cap, mounted in a steel chassis. The headline figure is a 10-gram reduction in cone weight. In subwoofer terms, that is not a trivial number. A lighter cone accelerates and stops faster. Bass that is fast and well-controlled is bass that stays in time with the rest of the music — percussion that lands where it should, double bass that tracks with the melody rather than arriving slightly late and leaving slightly early.
REL re-tuned the T/9x amplifier specifically to work with this driver, accommodating the increased speed and clarity the fibrecarbon cone makes possible. The chassis suspension has also been revised for faster low-frequency handling. This is not a standard T/9x in a new colour. The engineering follows the finish.
Five Colours, One Serious Point
The Special Edition comes in five hues: French Racing Blue, Green With Envy, Italian Racing Red, Le Mon Yellow, and Tangerine Dream. The names are deliberately playful. The product is not. REL are making a specific argument: that a subwoofer can be a visible, deliberate part of a room without apologising for being there. The Italian Racing Red finish is the most emphatic version of that argument — it asks to be noticed, and the performance underneath gives it the right to be.
If that feels like too much, the standard REL T/9x Serie Subwoofer remains available in black or white high-gloss. It is an excellent subwoofer. The SE is an excellent subwoofer that happens to make a room look different.
Where It Sits in the REL Range
The T/9x SE occupies a considered position in REL's lineup. Below it, the REL T Zero MK3 handles smaller rooms and more modest systems with the same REL philosophy applied at a smaller scale. Above it, the REL No.31 operates in a different register entirely — a reference-class subwoofer for systems where the T/9x SE would be the limiting factor, not the solution.
The T/9x SE is the right place for most serious two-channel systems that have outgrown their existing bass reproduction, or for home theatre setups where speed and impact both matter. It is not a subwoofer for rooms where you cannot hear it properly. Demo it at the right volume, in the right space, and the case makes itself.
